Year 2

Meet the Year Two Team

Hi! I’m Miss Anderson, the class teacher in 2A. In my spare time, I enjoy going on lots of dog walks and visiting exciting places with my family. I love getting all cosy in my pyjamas and watching a gripping TV series on Netflix and eating lots of chocolate.

When I finished school, I went to university and studied English and then went travelling to Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and America. After my year-long adventure, I gained some experience as a Teaching Assistant and then went on to complete my teaching degree. If I wasn’t a teacher, I would like to be an animal keeper as I would love to look after penguins every day.

I am so excited for all the fantastic things we're going to do this year!

Hello I'm Mrs Bamford and I am a Teaching Assistant in Year 2 with Miss Anderson. My favourite subject at school was Art, and I’ve always liked all things crafty, so getting creative with the children in school is one of my favourite things to do. I also enjoy carrying out ELSA interventions with children throughout the school.

I love relaxing at home with my family and I enjoy cooking, especially Italian, as pasta is my favourite food. I also love books and my ideal place to read would be on a sun lounger next to the sea on a sunny day.

Hi!! I am Mrs Tottle and the teacher in 2B. In my spare time I enjoy cycling, walking and climbing mountains with my family. My favourite foods include Yorkshire pudding and cakes. When not in school I like travelling around the United Kingdom exploring different places. When I was in school I enjoyed playing netball and exploring different chemicals in science. I have always wanted to be a teacher and went straight to University after leaving school to start my training. If I wasn't a teacher, I would like to be an accountant as I like money!

Hello, I’m Mrs Collins and the Teaching Assistant in 2B. In my spare time I like to practise my circus skills. I cannot wait to teach the children some circus skills as well. My favourite food is cooked dinner, so I really like cooked dinner day on a Wednesday. I love to go on holiday to France. I worked in a shop before becoming a Teaching Assistant. I am really excited about spending this year with the children in Year 2, I know we’ll have lots of fun!

Hello, I am Miss Hakim. Many of you may know me from my time with you in Reception, Year 1 and now Year 2. I cannot wait to see how much progress you make this year! In my spare time I like keeping fit and exercising which means I love taking part in PE sessions in school, so don't forget your PE kits. I love Italian food or anything pasta! In my spare time I love to walk my dogs and spend lots of time with my daughter.

What will we be learning throughout the Summer Term?

Our Spring term topic is called ‘Dungeons and Dragons’. During our Humanities sessions, we will look at a variety of castles in Wales and discuss the different types of castles and their features. We will locate Welsh cities on the map of Wales, as well as finding out about important Welsh events. We will research and look at Welsh history and landmarks and use this information to create our own fact files. We will explore the roles of Kings, Queens, Lords and Ladies and find out about the role of the knight. We will also look at Welsh coal mining and the conditions of working in a mine. We will explore myths and legends and find out the history of the Welsh flag.

Our Literacy work will be based around the story of ‘Zog the Dragon’ where pupils will listen to, plan and innovate their own version of the story. We will also read the stories of St Dwynwen and St David and create our own poems.

In our Maths and Numeracy sessions we will explore different types of measurements and find out if a dragon could fit on our school playground. We will look at data collection for our favourite Welsh foods and find out which are the most and least popular.

In our Expressive Arts sessions, pupils will design their own coat of arms and use craft materials to make their own shield. We will learn a variety of traditional Welsh songs as well as listening to popular music such as Tom Jones and the Stereophonics.

During Health and Wellbeing sessions, we will improve our basic movement skills by learning a variety of different Welsh folk dances including, ‘Jac Y Do’ and ‘Cylch y Cymru’.

Our Science will focus on materials and we will discuss, whenever possible, the various materials used in the building of different styles of castle.

How can you help at home this term?

There are plenty of opportunities and experiences that you can do with your child at home to support the learning we are doing in school.

During our ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ topic you might like to visit local castles and landmarks in Wales. We would love it if you could learn about different traffic signs and why these are important to pedestrians and drivers in Wales. Why not explore your local area and go for a walk or jog at Tredegar House. Why not try practising your measuring skills by cooking some Welsh cakes or bara brith at home as a family?

I wonder if any of our families have exciting jobs which involve working in Wales or have family members who worked in the coal mines? We’d love to hear all about your work! Why not share some photos or send us an email to tell us all about your job!

PE days

Each week we will have PE sessions which will help us to learn about how to keep fit and healthy. We will develop our skills of balance and coordination, as well as other activities such as dance and team games. Please ensure that your child has a PE kit in school ready for our PE sessions or they can wear their PE kit to school on a Thursday. Please ensure all jewellery is removed on PE days.

What will we be learning throughout the Autumn Term?

Our journey in the Autumn Term will take us on an adventure through the Human Body. In our Science and Technology sessions, we will be discovering all sorts of fascinating facts about ourselves from our brains to our toes! We will be carrying out experiments about how to keep fit and healthy and using our senses to explore the world. We are looking forward to developing first aid and life skills through role play and drama activities. In our Literacy lessons we will be expanding our vocabulary through the book, ‘Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Bogey?’ by using exciting adjectives and innovating our own stories. In our Maths sessions we will be focusing on number relationships, measuring how tall we are using various resources and data collection for hair and eye colour. During Health and Wellbeing lessons we will be looking at healthy lifestyles, celebrating our similarities and differences as well as developing our ball skills. In Humanities, we will be creating a timeline of the key events in Florence Nightingale’s life, exploring Black History Month and celebrating Diwali. Our Expressive Arts sessions will include creating self-portraits, lots of singing practice for our Winter performance and Christmas craft.

How can you help at home this term?

There are plenty of opportunities and experiences that you can do with your child at home to support the learning we are doing in school.

During our ‘Every Body’ topic you might like to discuss ways you can keep fit and healthy at home. We would love it if you could practise tying your child's laces with them! Why not explore your local area and go for a walk or jog at Tredegar House. Why not try cooking some healthy meals with your children and make your own recipe book! You may even discover the next Jamie Oliver!

I wonder if any of our families have exciting jobs which involve caring for people or helping us when we are sick. We’d love to hear all about your work! Why not share some photos or send us an email to tell us all about your job!

Please encourage your children to log into Mathletics and Oxford Reading Buddy independently so they can become familiar with using a username and password. You could also talk about the importance of being safe online and following the same rules that we use in school such as not sharing information online and appropriate online behaviour. There are a number of good resources and websites that can help you to talk to your child about online safety.

Hwb provides access to a range of creative tools that allow the children to animate, code, draw pictures and develop their creative skills. You can also find a wealth of information about their learning and even about the new curriculum in Wales.

Please visit the ‘Connect’ page on our website to discover more exciting activities that you can do at home. You may even see a few familiar faces!

Communication...

If you would like to chat to us, we kindly ask that you contact the school office on 01633 817161 or via email at tredegarpark.primary@newportschools.wales and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
